High-Performance Bidirectional Motor Control Architecture

The Texas Instruments SN754410NE is a monolithic, high-voltage, high-current quadruple half-H bridge driver designed to provide robust bidirectional drive currents up to 1 A continuous (2 A peak) per channel. Operating across a wide supply voltage range from 4.5 V to 36 V, this integrated circuit is engineered to interface low-power digital logic directly with power-demanding inductive loads, including brushed DC motors, bipolar stepper motors, high-current relays, and electromechanical solenoids. The independent half-H output channels can be paired to form two full-H bridge drivers, making it an essential building block for motion control systems requiring precise directional and speed control via Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM).

Enhanced L293 Pin-Compatible Design with Integrated Protection

Housed in a standard 16-pin Plastic Dual In-Line Package (PDIP), the SN754410NE offers a direct drop-in pinout replacement for the classic L293 series while providing significantly superior functional integration. Unlike non-D variants of the L293, the SN754410NE incorporates internal high-speed output clamp diodes across all power output transistors. These integrated flyback suppression diodes safely absorb inductive back-EMF voltage spikes generated during motor commutation or sudden de-energization. This internal protection eliminates the requirement for external Schottky diode arrays, dramatically reducing printed circuit board footprint, trace routing complexity, and overall bill of materials (BOM) cost.


Flexible Logic Control and Parallel Stacking Capability

The device features separate high-enable control inputs for each pair of half-H drivers, allowing outputs to be quickly put into a high-impedance state for coasting or power conservation. All control inputs are fully compatible with 5V TTL and 3.3V/5V CMOS logic levels, enabling seamless control directly from microcontrollers, FPGAs, or development platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, STM32, and Raspberry Pi. In high-torque applications where load currents exceed 1 A per channel, two SN754410NE ICs can be stacked directly on top of each other in parallel (piggybacked) with pin-for-pin soldering to double the continuous current drive capacity up to nearly 2 A per channel without redesigning the PCB layout.

Thermal Management and Versatile Application Use-Cases

To handle thermal dissipation under sustained heavy loads, the four central pins of the 16-pin package (pins 4, 5, 12, and 13) are connected directly to the internal lead-frame ground plane. These pins function as high-efficiency thermal sinks, transferring heat out of the silicon die and into the copper ground traces of the host printed circuit board. The SN754410NE is widely deployed in robotics platforms, automated linear actuators, CNC axis drivers, automated door locks, custom motor control shields, and industrial automation equipment.
