FRDM-K64F: Freedom Development Platform for Kinetis K64, K63, and K24 MCUs

Overview

The FRDM-K64F is an ultra-low-cost development platform for the NXP Kinetis K64, K63, and K24 microcontrollers. Built on an ARM Cortex-M4 core operating at speeds up to 120 MHz with 1MB of Flash and 256KB SRAM, this evaluation board provides a versatile hardware foundation for prototyping Internet of Things applications, smart devices, and industrial control systems.

Hardware Capabilities and Features

Equipped with an integrated 10/100 Ethernet port, a MicroSD card slot, and dual micro-USB connectors, the FRDM-K64F offers comprehensive connectivity options out of the box. Onboard hardware includes an FXOS8700CQ 6-axis digital accelerometer and magnetometer sensor, an RGB LED, and user push buttons. Outer headers follow the standard Arduino R3 pinout, providing compatibility with a wide variety of expansion shields.

Debugging and Software Integration

The board features NXP OpenSDAv2, an open-source hardware embedded serial and debug adapter. OpenSDAv2 provides flash programming, virtual serial port communication, and run-control debugging via CMSIS-DAP or SEGGER J-Link options. The platform is fully supported by MCUXpresso IDE, Arm Mbed OS, Zephyr RTOS, and standard third-party toolchains.
