Maximum Power Point Tracking Solar Charging

The SparkFun Sunny Buddy is a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) solar charger designed for single-cell Lithium Polymer (LiPo) or Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries. This board allows you to extract the maximum possible energy from your solar panel and efficiently charge a connected battery. Simply connect your solar panel to one input, plug your battery into the output, and power your off-grid electronics reliably.

High Efficiency LT3652 Architecture

At the heart of the board is the LT3652 power tracking battery charger IC from Analog Devices / Linear Technology. The circuit utilizes an advanced buck regulator topology that automatically manages power transfer to keep the solar panel operating at its peak voltage efficiency. While configured out-of-the-box for standard 6V solar panels, the input voltage threshold can be adjusted for panels up to 20V.

Adjustable Current and Easy Connections

By default, the Sunny Buddy supplies a maximum charge current of 450mA, which can be increased up to 2A by modifying a sense resistor. The board features standard 2-pin JST-PH connectors for both battery and solar panel attachment, as well as 0.1-inch spaced header pins for custom wiring and integration into solar-powered remote sensor networks.
