High-Precision LPG and Propane Detection
The MQ-6 Gas Sensor Module is an industrial-grade chemoresistive sensor designed for accurate detection of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), propane, iso-butane, and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). Engineered to mitigate false positives, the sensor displays extremely low cross-sensitivity to airborne alcohol vapors, cigarette smoke, and ambient cooking fumes, making it an essential component for both domestic and industrial safety systems.
Operating Principle and Material Science
The core sensing element utilizes a Micro-AL2O3 ceramic tube coated with a sensitive layer of Tin Dioxide (SnO2), encapsulated within a dual-layer stainless steel mesh. In clean air, SnO2 exhibits low electrical conductivity due to adsorbed oxygen ions forming a potential barrier. When target combustible gases are present, catalytic oxidation reduces the oxygen surface concentration, dropping the potential barrier and increasing sensor conductivity proportionally with gas concentration. A simple external load resistor converts this resistance shift into a readable analog voltage output.
Circuit Design and System Integration
Integrating the MQ-6 into microcontroller ecosystems such as Arduino, ESP32, or STM32 requires minimal peripheral hardware. The internal heater coil operates at a standardized 5V DC supply, maintaining the optimal operating temperature required for the oxidation reaction. The module provides both an analog voltage output (A0) for continuous concentration gradient measurement and a digital output (D0) driven by an onboard LM393 comparator with an adjustable threshold potentiometer for direct trigger applications.
