The PCF8563 Real-Time Clock module is a high-precision, low-power CMOS clock and calendar circuit optimized for embedded systems requiring long-term time retention. It tracks seconds, minutes, hours, days, weekdays, months, and years with automatic compensation for leap years and month lengths of 28, 29, 30, and 31 days. Supporting both 12-hour and 24-hour formats, this module provides reliable timekeeping for microcontrollers, data logging devices, and industrial automation equipment.
Designed for battery-critical applications, the PCF8563 exhibits ultra-low current consumption, typically drawing just 0.25 uA at 3.0V. The onboard coin-cell battery backup circuit ensures seamless transition when main VCC supply voltage fails, allowing the internal oscillator and memory registers to stay active without time loss for up to ten years. Integrated power-loss detection circuitry alerts the main system whenever power drops below operational thresholds.
The module communicates via a Fast-mode I2C serial interface running up to 400 kHz. In addition to timekeeping registers, the PCF8563 features programmable square-wave clock outputs capable of generating 32.768 kHz, 1024 Hz, 32 Hz, and 1 Hz reference signals. It also incorporates customizable alarm functions and countdown timers, which trigger the open-drain interrupt output pin to wake host microcontrollers from deep-sleep states.
Interfacing with the module is straightforward through its standard 6-pin header layout. The INT pin provides open-drain interrupt signaling for alarms and countdown triggers. The COT pin delivers the programmable clock output signal. Communication is managed through the SCL serial clock line and SDA serial data line. System power is supplied via VCC, supporting operational voltages from 1.0V to 5.5V, and standard system ground connected to GND.
The PCF8563 RTC module is an essential component for projects requiring accurate time-stamping, scheduled sleep-wake routines, and low standby power draw. Typical deployment includes IoT sensor nodes, automated weather stations, digital meters, wearable devices, and embedded logging systems driven by Arduino, ESP32, STM32, or Raspberry Pi platforms.
