High-Performance Night Vision Imaging for Raspberry Pi

The OmniVision OV5647 5MP Night Vision Camera Module offers crisp, clear imaging in total darkness, making it an essential hardware addition for computer vision, nocturnal wildlife tracking, and security applications. Featuring a 5-megapixel native resolution sensor with a 1/4-inch optical format and 1.4µm x 1.4µm pixel geometry, this unit captures high-resolution still photographs at 2592 x 1944 pixels as well as fluid video streams up to 1080p at 30fps, 720p at 60fps, and 640x480p at 90fps. The camera includes a smooth manual focus M12 lens assembly, giving hardware developers precise control over focal depth and image clarity across varying distances from macro inspection to broad field-of-view monitoring.

Adjustable Dual Infrared Illuminators and Thermal Management

Flanking the central optical module are two high-output 3W infrared (IR) LED boards operating at an optimal 850nm wavelength to provide invisible lighting for pitch-black environments. Each IR board incorporates an onboard photoresistor that continuously monitors ambient light levels. Users can easily calibrate the low-light trigger threshold using a small precision screwdriver on the onboard potentiometer, enabling automatic day-to-night switching while conserving power and reducing thermal load during daylight hours. For high-duty cycle or continuous lighting demands, aluminum heatsinks can be mounted directly to the rear of the LED PCBs to ensure optimal thermal performance and long-term reliability.

Universal Raspberry Pi and Pi 5 Cable Compatibility

Engineered to work out-of-the-box with the entire Raspberry Pi ecosystem, this camera kit includes two distinct flat flexible cables (FFC/FPC). The standard 15-pin 1.0mm pitch ribbon cable connects directly to legacy MIPI CSI-2 ports found on Raspberry Pi 4B, 3B+, 3, 2, and Model B+. Additionally, an included 22-pin 0.5mm pitch adapter cable provides seamless connectivity with the high-density CSI ports found on the Raspberry Pi 5 and the Raspberry Pi Zero series. Native driver support within libcamera and V4L2 frameworks ensures effortless software integration across Raspberry Pi OS and embedded Linux distributions.

Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Power Distribution Design

The main camera PCB measures 25 mm x 24 mm and features four precision corner mounting holes. These plated screw terminals serve a dual purpose: mechanically anchoring the dual IR illumination wings and conducting 3.3V power directly to the LEDs without requiring additional external wiring harness runs. This compact hardware integration streamlines physical mounting inside custom 3D-printed enclosures and pan-tilt units. This versatile imaging system is ideal for smart home surveillance, outdoor environmental monitoring, robotics optical navigation, automated IoT vision systems, and OpenCV edge AI processing.
