Advanced TCS3200 Color Detection Technology
Elevate your embedded systems and robotics projects with the TCS3200 Color Sensor Module, an advanced physical computing component designed to analyze and detect ambient and reflected spectral light. By leveraging the TAOS TCS3200 programmable light-to-frequency converter IC, this module transforms detected optical wavelength intensity into precise digital pulse outputs, enabling microcontrollers to measure color characteristics without requiring analog-to-digital converters.
Programmable Photodiode Array and Signal Output
At the core of the sensor is an 8x8 array of photodiodes split into four distinct filter groups: 16 photodiodes with red filters, 16 with green filters, 16 with blue filters, and 16 clear photodiodes without filters. By manipulating control pins S2 and S3, your host processor can dynamically select which photodiode array filter to activate. The light intensity gathered by the active array is subsequently converted into a 50% duty cycle square wave whose frequency is directly proportional to the irradiance of the targeted color spectrum. Digital control pins S0 and S1 provide selectable full-scale output frequency scaling to 2%, 20%, or 100%, allowing fine tuning for high-speed microcontrollers as well as lower-power processing environments.
On-Board Illumination and Logic Integration
The module features four integrated high-luminosity white light-emitting diodes surrounding the sensor lens, guaranteeing consistent target illumination regardless of ambient light variations. Operating on a flexible single-supply range from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, the digital inputs and outputs directly interface with standard 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers including Arduino, STM32, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi. An Output Enable (OE) pin allows the sensor output to enter a high-impedance state, facilitating shared bus topologies across multiple sensors on a single microcontroller line.
